PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CANCER WASTING
1) Cancer cells release chemicals into the body which induce the breakdown of muscle (lean body mass) and fat stores (adipose tissue) which results in cancer wasting syndrome.
2) Immune cells become activated to fight cancer. Immune activation results in the release of chemical messengers from the immune cells called “cytokines” (chemical mediators of the inflammatory response). Long term overproduction of cytokines contributes to the breakdown and depletion of lean body mass, fat and glycogen stores.
3) Chemotherapy and radiation therapy lead to the loss of lean body mass and fat stores by several different mechanisms. Important changes include reduced caloric intake due to anorexia, and gastrointestinal tract damage, leading to malabsorption.
